Goals: To get healthier and lose a bit of weight. I have irritable bowel syndrome and I wanted to see if the Gut Makeover would help my digestive system work better.
Notes: Before my Gut Makeover I used to drink three glasses of wine every evening. I had the habit of drinking while cooking the evening meal. The wine: it is a funny thing – it’s pretty much in the head. Once I started the Gut Makeover the wine became secondary because I became so focused on the diet and doing something good for my health. I was not just eating for the sake of eating; I was nourishing myself.
The biggest challenge for me was the planning and getting organized. I photocopied the meal plans from the book and the list of foods to eat, and stuck them on the kitchen wall. I used a lot of recipes from the book, and also adapted some of my own.
I did the plan with my husband, and I was asking on the Facebook page about portion sizes near the beginning as we were eating a lot. We were eating more than before, but in fact, both of us lost weight.
My IBS has now gone – it’s the first time I have not been suffering with loose stools since I was 15 years old! I feel inclined to carry on with this style of eating longer term. I will go back to wine, but at the weekend – definitely not every day – and will have it as a treat. I am going to try some sourdough bread and see if gluten triggers my IBS symptoms again. If it does, I will consider cutting it out long term.
The Gut Makeover was a revelation for us. We have really enjoyed it.
Benefits: This was my first respite from IBS in 42 years and I lost 7 pounds. I was in Paris for the last three days of the plan and all my friends told me that I looked different – really healthy and great.
Biggest tip: Try to get organized the week before you start. Prepare some of the new things such as boiled potatoes to keep in the fridge and make the banana bread. Start the week with a roast chicken because then you have a base for meals for the next three days sorted.
